Breathe me in

I walked outside the door this morning into a quiet, still, foggy, misting morning with a light breeze. While I am fully aware that God is not in creation in any specific thing or place, God is present here with us. Probably more than we are able to realize and perhaps to witness. Some may consider this speculation, but I am met by God's peace in the fog. Like the cloud surrounding Mt. Sinai maybe. The fog envelopes you, is breathed into your lungs and body--it fills and encompasses you. It slows me down since I can only see so far before my vision is clouded. I am forced to trust more because the cloud prevents me from knowing too much. Perhaps even things I am not to know or do not need to know. I am moved to pray when it's foggy. The stillness of the clouds come down to earth remind me to communicate with my sustainer, provider, lover. What comes off as a trite reply is all I can muster amidst the awe I experience: Thanks for the fog God.

Here is where we can rejoice that God is mystery. I know those mornings. I remember them well from my childhood. Waking up in the morning, walking outside to the horse pasture next to our house and feeling the foggy dew collect on my legs as I stood and watched the sun rise over the hill. Yes, I thank God for foggy mornings as well.
